Wheeler Peak

Yesterday I was in Taos and un predictably suddenly found myself at the top of the world near Wheeler Peak. It is the highest peak in the U.S. state of New Mexico, with an elevation of 13,161 feet (4,011 m). It is located in the northern part of the state, northeast of Taos. It lies in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the southernmost subrange of the Rocky Mountains.

Named in honor of Major George Montague Wheeler (1832 – 1909) who for ten years led a party of surveyors and naturalists collecting geologic, biologic, planimetric and topographic data in New Mexico and six other southwestern states. The mountain was formerly called Taos Peak, after the nearby town of Taos, New Mexico.

theres a whole

disenfranchised well to do army of us

thay call us secular

you can spot us most easily

by the bumper stickers on our cars

the christians would say we are sinners

or worst yet lukewarm

we dont believe in anything specifically

but we believe in most everything

but “that”

we are fond of saying

“its all good”

i suppose we forget

a broken leg hurts like hell

we revere anything

from blue angels to animal magic to the

knights of the round table

and a few of us even

think highly of jesus by another name

but when passion is spread out

so thinnly among any deity you could find

in a santa fe new age shop

and theres no threat of hell….

because well, its all good

its turned most liberal do gooders

into road kill for the right wing

because fundamentalistism

is ready to die

fight a war kill a man

destroy the planet if thay have to

right here right now

for their one name one thing

which is something

the secular world

just dont have
